About
My Journey
My working career started as an admin assistant, and I worked my way up to running my own large Call Centres.
I was lucky enough to work with some great and trusted brands such as the BBC, Royal Mail and Legal & General, who gave me the opportunity to develop, and continue studying and gain Operational experience within large Customer Service Organisations.
I utilised the opportunity of a career break to undertake voluntary work in Africa, job coaching the homeless, and to become an accredited qualified Life Coach.
The trip to Africa reignited my creative side and led to me starting my own creative business where I work collectively with Artisans in Africa, which helps to support their sustainability.
My social involvement includes a few projects and enterprises that focus on supporting the underrepresented in the city to have the same opportunities to move forward in their lives.
A chance meeting in the green room of a TV comedy gave birth to the idea of Rise (recognising individual successes and efforts), a social enterprise which was established after a discussion about the lack of visibility of black businesses on the high street.
The organisation specialised in providing opportunities for those businesses to promote what they do to a wider audience through organised events, exhibitions and on a weekly radio program. We have delivered workshops for Black women around personal development and starting their own business and the annual Rise Awards in the city which recognises and celebrates achievements in Business, Community and Entrepreneurship.
As well as a presenter and Broadcaster for community radio led me to become Strategic lead partner for the Black and Green Ambassadors program – putting Black voices into Green environmental spaces, where traditionally we have been absent.
The work for Women’s equality was supported through my work with Bristol Women’s voice, which is a powerful voice for making women’s equality in Bristol a reality, and as a member of the Mayoral Women’s Commission and Business task group.
I am currently a Director for the Bristol Women in Business Charter, where we believe that businesses cannot reach their full potential if they fail to recruit and retain a gender-balanced workforce. Our purpose is to recognise and support businesses in and around Bristol that are making progress towards gender equality.
Our ambition is to help accelerate the pace of change for the benefit of women, the businesses they work in and the communities they live in.
I became a Commissioner and Co-Chair for the Mayoral Commission on Race Equality to help work on collective solutions to tackling the race inequalities faced by so many in the city.
I am also passionate about inclusion and representation and was honoured to be appointed as a Magistrate and as a governor for City of Bristol College.
My hope is that everyone in Bristol has an equal opportunity to benefit and enjoy the fruits of this prosperous vibrant city. It will be normal to see an all-inclusive diverse high street within the city centre. Ethnic role models and those in senior prominent positions of power will be easily visible and reflect the make-up of a changing Bristol.
At the heart of everything I do is about giving everyone a chance to be the best they can be and to bring balance and equity to those groups who are disadvantaged in our society.
Across the country, ITV News has spoken to ground breaking individuals from the black community to learn about their life experiences and to hear their vision for the future. Sandra Gordon is one of Bristol's few black magistrates. She sat down with ITV West Country journalist Alpha Ceesay-to talk about the importance of being a role model and working to be the change you want to see. Now as an activist, magistrate, radio presenter, and more all rolled into one, she uses her platforms to achieve one goal- to create a fairer and more equal society.
About SLG Coaching & Consultancy
I specialise in the following types of Coaching; Life Coaching, Career Coaching, Executive Coaching and Leadership Coaching (supporting women into these positions and equitable inclusive leadership).
The right coach can help you to understand yourself, change your career and personal life and help you to become more satisfied and fulfilled than ever before.
Personal development is about increasing your self-awareness. Life coaching and career coaching aim to pull out your strengths and weaknesses in order to identify the potential that already exists within you.
This is often accomplished through a series of questions designed to help you recognise, accept, and build upon those strengths and weaknesses and support you through developing and being accountable for your own future plans and strategies. These personalised plans will help you to begin the journey towards success and happiness.
The advantages of leadership coaching, especially one to one, can help you to provide clarity and insight into the challenges you are facing. Through supporting you to overcome them, with someone who can hold you accountable to reach your goals.
It can also create a space for you to speak your mind, be heard, and learn.
Everyone with the right support and direction can develop their leadership style and improve their skills, the capabilities they need to inspire and enable their teams to thrive in an ever-changing environment.
Demonstrating inclusivity as a leader can be challenging for some. Even the leaders who fully embrace the business case for diversity, can sometimes feel unprepared to be inclusive and equitable. Although they aim for inclusive leadership, they don’t understand what to do, or how to modify their current approaches and inherent behaviours.
The coaching program focuses on you as a leader and your transformational journey, the content is applicable for senior leaderships within people orientated organisations. We are operating in a continually changing environment and organisations need leaders who are intuitive, culturally aware, and able to effectively adapt and lead in a world of difference.
At the heart of everything I do is about bringing balance and equity to those groups who are disadvantaged in our society. The consultancy arm of my business provides organisations with services to assist their EDI journey including organisational culture, I mainly specialise in supporting organisations in areas of Gender and Race.
One of the challenges organisations are currently facing is how to attract and retain a more diverse inclusion workforce. We know that diverse team helps companies be more innovative, creative and achieve better results.
The role of an Equitable Diverse recruiter offers a temporary solution to organisations who find themselves in this position. The service provides diversity of thought on your recruitment campaign, diversity recruitment strategy including, the advert, the advertising strands, shortlisting process and being part of the interviewing panel, especially for those organisations who have a gap of diversity within your HR departments.
At the heart of this is people and how we see and treat each other.
